Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are computer systems that generate patient-specific scores, interpretation, advice, or risk estimates to support clinical decisions such as diagnosis, treatment, or test orders. They are known to be effective in many settings. A clinical decision support system (CDSS) improves the healthcare delivery system by enhancing medical decisions with targeted clinical knowledge, patient information, and other health information (Sutton et al., 2020).

Patient safety: CDSSs improve patient safety by administering personalized medications to the individual, thus reducing adverse medication events and being competent in ordering medications and the needed tests (Mazo et al., 2020). CDSSs alerts patients’ allergies to drugs, and drug-to-drug interaction is critical because patients’ outcome could be significantly affected if given medication that they are allergic to or two medications that could cause harm when given together. CDSSs catch what healthcare providers (HCP) might have missed. Health care providers’ goal is to keep patients safe. Errors involving drug-drug interactions (DDI) are the most common and preventable, with up to 65% of inpatients being exposed to one or more potentially harmful combinations (Sutton et al., 2020) Alarm fatigue: CDSS alarm alerts might be too overwhelming if they contain insignificant alerts. These non-important alarms may provoke providers to start ignoring them and might lead to dismissing a vital alarm.
